My Dad Got an iPod Touch for Christmas
That’s right. Like many, many other happy people on Christmas, he unwrapped an iPod. I never thought I would see the day when he would adopt new technology. If you understood my father, you would realize that the only reason he needed an iPod is because his Sony walkman (radio and cassette player) broke. I realize that some people reading this may actually have to Google that. Heck, it was not until a year and a half ago when he purchased a cell phone. Actually, it was purchased for him.
So I get the call Christmas morning. “Guess what I got….” Already knowing what he was getting I stopped him short and said, “Congrats getting up to speed with modern times. Don’t worry, it’s an Apple device. Just download iTunes and plug the iPod in. You will figure it out from there.”
“I can’t find the instructions booklet.”
“Dad, just plug it in. You will be able to figure it out without one. That’s the beauty of the device.”
It’s been a couple weeks now and I only received one call from him regarding a support question. Two days ago he called and said, “Jon, how do I get my mail on this thing?”
That single statement. That one common phrase. That “you know it’s going to be asked for anyone with a smartphone, iPod, iPad, Galaxy Tab, Android device, etc.” is the one every IT department is hearing louder and louder. It’s not going away. It’s only going to get harder and harder to deal with, unless action is taken.
The action can be as simple as, “Click on the link in the email I just sent you. Follow the steps on the screen and you will begin getting your email in just a couple of minutes. Thank you and have a nice day.”

Being in sales, for a technology company none the less, I hated how I cursed the thought of all these new apps and touchscreen devices that everyone just had to have. I swore I would never get off my Blackberry. And to put it frankly, I sounded like my father who calls a computer mouse a “moose”.
Today I made the change to iPhone. The only reason why I loved Blackberry so much was because of the non touch keyboard. Sad to admit but this meant the ability to text while driving. Whether it was a customer placing an order or the wife asking me to pick up more wine because the kids were extra nuts, I could easily feel around and send a quick “Thank You” or “K”.
When one of those “thank you’s” or “Okay’s” almost turned this sales rep / father of two into a pile of rubble, I smartly decided enough was enough and that I needed a phone that would not even allow the possibility to text while driving. Hence the iPhone to my rescue and I’m pretty sure that there’s an app out there that will turn speach to words.
People in sales always say Good Selling. I have the saying Life and Death of a Salesman. So Safe Selling to all, go get an iPhone. Oh and ABC…always be closing…call me when you need Visibility & Control on that device
